Ireland's Oldest Walking Group - The Brothers of the Lug

We are Ireland’s Oldest Walking Group, an unpretentious, friendly and easygoing band of hillwalkers, about thirty strong, based in Dublin, with a long, (possibly) fascinating history, and a unique, faintly absurd spirit, (occasionally necessitating the use of silly hats).

The Brotherhood, or more informally – ‘The Lugs’, was formed in 1903, on the summit of Lugnaquilla, and take a lot of our spirit and organisational structure from this original group. (More information on our compelling history here.) This, at times, may involve certain arcane rituals and titles, the aforementioned silly hats, and an enjoyment of the mildly preposterous.

Led by the Master in The Field , we follow a schedule of walks laid out on a bi-annual basis in our walks programme. A shorter ramble is often undertaken by the less physically impressive specimens within the group. (Flexibility in such matters being one of the advantages of our semi-informal nature!)

Post perambulation, it is customary to retire to a suitable hostelry for some well-earned refreshments and lively post-walk confabulation.

Lugs Lyrics

OH, IT’S TOUGH, MIGHTY TOUGH BEING A LUG

(Air: Oh! They’re tough mighty tough in the West)
verse i

“Oh! It’s tough, mighty tough being a Lug,
For you could be sittin’ home and feelin’ snug,
But you’re out in lousy weather,
And the damp has reached your nethers,
Oh! It’s tough, mighty tough being a lug!”

OH, IT’S TOUGH, MIGHTY TOUGH BEING A LUG

(Air: Oh! They’re tough mighty tough in the West)
verse ii

“The lugs they like to walk out on the hills,
And enjoy the love of nature it instils,
We would like to get out early,
But there’s some who make it barely,
And then it’s only when they take their pills.”

(Air: Oh! They’re tough mighty tough in the West)
verse iii

“After walks we like to go back for a jar,
As we settle ourselves down beside the bar,
We’ll have coffee, ale or Guinness,
Just to put the life back in us,
And recall our latest feats and deeds bizarre.”

(Air: Oh! They’re tough mighty tough in the West)
verse iv

“But there’s one from after walk drinks does abstain,
Have to go and cook the dinner he’ll explain,
For I’ve got a chicken Kiev,
And I’ve got to go and see if,
That chick will be dessert course or the main.”

(Air: Oh! They’re tough mighty tough in the West)
verse v

“Oh! It’s tough, mighty tough being a Lug,
But you just can’t help it once you get the bug,
You spend dough on fancy raingear,
Then it won’t rain for the next year,
Oh! It’s tough, mighty tough being a lug!”

(Air: Oh! They’re tough mighty tough in the West)
verse vi

“Oh! It’s tough, mighty tough being a Lug,
All those gadgets we’ve accepted with a shrug,
Our maps now are electronic,
But map reading is still chronic,
Oh! It’s tough, mighty tough being a lug!”
