About The Grand Master

I’ve always loved walking the Wicklow Hills and after joining the Brothers of the Lug in 1976, I walked in the footsteps of the great J.B.Malone for many years. In 2003, I was elected Grand Master on the summit of Mother Lug. My profession of Graphic Designer inspired me to produce an illustrated programme every six months, with sketch maps of our walks and in later years lots of colour photos of our activities. Since then I’ve produced many programmes. It keeps me happily occupied in my retirement years!

Thoughts on ‘Trip-gate’

Is Teresa Wall going to walk away with 40k? Here's hoping the appeal judge will see sense. All walkers, whether on boardwalk or mountain track have a duty of care - look where you are putting your bloody feet! The good lady had just been on a long hike and we all know that it is harder to lift the auld leg when you are tired, especially when 60 years old. If she wins this appeal, it will be a disaster for all hillwalkers. UPDATE: High Court reverses €40,000 award to hill walker. Judge says "She was not looking [...]

Sunday Walk: Cruagh Mountain from Bullaun Stone to Massey’s Glen. 27/11/16

Good turnout ( eventually! ). 11 Lugs out. 4 Lugs did the walk in reverse - typical Lugs! Weather cold and misty over Cruagh but cleared up later. Decided not to go down the boardwalk as planned but went directly down to the Cruagh Woods 'Loop'.  After our suss, Noel & G.M. cut out the walk down through Massey's Wood and went on to Ballinteer House to warm up the seats! The others joined later and all had a good post walk session. Verdict: A short walk but the vivid colours of the woods was a fine reward. [...]

Wednesday Walk: Donadea Forest Park 16/11/16

A most enjoyable 5.9 k circular walk in the glorious Autumnal woods of this little visited park. Apart from the vivid colours of the trees, an interesting feature is a fine memorial to the firemen and policemen killed on 9/11 in New York. Lugs present: Jim McCormack, Dermot Gunn, Bernard McMahon, Brendan Smith, Tom Barragry and Dermot Quinn (G.M.).

First Steps

Over 100 years ago, the Brothers of the Lug clubbed together to purchase the finest technology of the day - a compass for 2'6. Today we have at last, and at considerably more expense, embraced the technology of the 21st century with the launch of our splendid new website. It is hoped that in the first place, the website will attract the attention of some suitable Asps to lower the age profile of the Lugs, and assure the continuation of the Brotherhood into the future. Secondly, it is intended to serve as a communication platform for news, gossip, photos, etc., as well as [...]

The Historic and Mysterious Brotherhood of the Lug

It was always thought, by those that cared, that the records of the brotherhood from 1903 were taken to England by an original member and could not be traced. However, five years ago, out of the blue, two notebooks were discovered, containing records, not only of the founding of the group in 1903, but details of its activities each year until the 1940s, thus completing the group’s records for 112 years. Lugs Diary The “Brotherhood” was founded by Messrs Redmond, Ross, Scanlan, Bateman and Martyn on [...]
